The Fediverse

Post by Cassie »

I was trying to explain the Fediverse to Eggs in the chat, and after he left I was talking to my nerd friends on the fedi about how to explain the Fediverse. THEN I remembered the Pleroma FAQ which explains it much better than I did. https://pleroma.social/blog/2021/01/13/ ... verse-faq/

Several of them said to say it's like email, the way hotmail, gmail, yahoo, etc speak the same language. Except everyone can read, reply, re-post, or react with an emoji.

Anyway, I have become obsessed with decentralization of social media. Forums are decentralized, but everyone has abandoned them for Twitter and Facebook. The Fediverse is very much like Twitter, except you make your own rules, no ads, no algorithms, etc.

No, the crazy right wing ones start out that way. If you start an instance it's like starting your own forum. You make the rules, and decide which other instances to interact with. There are lots of crazy left wing instances, too.
